Early yesterday morning, HTC made Viveport available to the masses and there’s a few things you need to take a look at right away.
For starters, you need to make sure your Vive app on your computer has been updated. For most of us the process starts automatically, but I received a notice on my screen that I had to click before the install could begin. The latest Vive PC Client is version 1.0.8889 (r931). When the install is complete you can launch the Vive icon to see the Viveport homepage and its featured content.
Secondly, today marks the final hours in the 48-hour Launch Celebration on select titles you can purchase through Viveport. There are a few high quality options available for only $1 that you won’t want to miss out on and there’s at least one title you can avoid and spend your money somewhere else.
The list of VR experiences available for $1 for less than 24 hours:
- theBlu
- Stonehenge VR
- Firebird – La Peri
- The Music Room (mini version)
- Mars Odyssey
If you don’t already have the titles through Steam I’d recommend you purchase theBlu and Mars Odyssey. These titles are great for demoing to friends and family and the impressive amount of detail is worth experiencing over and over again. I haven’t tried Stonehenge VR or Firebid – La Peri yet, but those are downloading to my library as I type. Reviews for The Music Room Mini did not look positive. One comment even says it’s not worth paying one dollar for.
Initially, I didn’t see an option to purchase games, not even the free ones. I had to use my web browser to go to Viveport and add my method of payment which I then saved for later purchases. Shortly after that, I was able to make purchases from both the web and the desktop app. If you make a purchase through the website it will take a few minutes to populate in your downloads section.
Aside from the storefront, Viveport includes customization options in the Vive Home virtual space that I would recommend trying out and HTC has also added a video player where you can add personal media files to a folder on your computer to watch in the Vive headset.
We were hoping HTC would take this opportunity to launch Front Defense; a VR experience made by HTC since it has already been making appearances at show floors around the world.
